March and April are great months to come to Ibiza and cycle along its small roads and trails.
The grass is still green and fields are full of yellow wall rockets and are not burned by the summer sun.
I must say I had a great surprise at how friendly the drivers are in this island. Not one has horned me, something normal in other places I´ve visited, and none has been aggressive with me, rather they waited patiently behind me until they could pass me.

What I liked most is riding on the small secondary roads of the northern part of the island where you will find Santa Eulalia, San Carlos, San Juan, San Miguel, San Lorenzo and many beautiful coves.
 

One of the first advantages you find riding an electric bike is that the times you need to manage a certain distances are almost the same every time and everyday regardless of traffic. Why? Because you can maintain the same average speed without great effort. Even in sections where one direction is uphill and another downhill, such as Santa Eulalia to San Miguel and vice versa. It takes me about 44 minutes to San Miguel most time going uphill, not much, but uphill. However from San Miguel to Santa Eulalia it takes me 37 minutes. Not a big difference.

Another important advantage is the economy. These 600 km would have cost me about 100 euros in gasoline. Anyone could argue that the time spent on a trip is also money. I argue that the time to find a parking place and then walk into the city to the destination must also be counted for.

Yes, it is quicker to go to Santa Eulalia from Ibiza by car, but ... Is it as effective when you enter the city? Parking, walking, traffic ... My time to Santa Eulalia from Ibiza is roughly 37 minutes at an average of 23 km/h. Not much more than it takes with a car. Not to mention if there is hippy market day in Es Canar or Las Dalias.

I think the bike was invented as a mean of personal transport. With the arrival of cars, bicycles became a recreational vehicle and evolved towards this tough sport we call cycling in all its facets. It seems that with the advent of the crisis our cities have started filling up with new riders convinced not only about saving, but because after a while you can´t live without it.

But Spain is very mountainous and many of our towns and cities have some "important" slopes for most humans. This problem is solved by the electric bicycle, or as we should call it, pedal assisted bicycle. The slopes become plains and strong headwind do not stop us dry on the road.

Yes, cycling is an exercise, and in summer time in Spain it can be uncomfortable because we get sweaty to where we need to go. The pedal assisted bicycle solves this problem and help us arrive fresh and oxygenated.

Something bad about pedal-assist bicycles? Few things. A situation you don´t want to happen is to run out of battery. But there are many restaurants with local or international food in the interior roads of the islands, and beaches and coves have usually a restaurant or two. It's just a matter of stopping for a drink or a meal, relax, and ask politely if we can charge our batteries.

There are also small shops to stock up on food and drink and points of interest because of its architecture or natural beauty that are visited by many locals and tourists.
And I wonder ... Why not to install charging infrastructures for cars, bicycles and electric motorcycles?

Many people ask me if cars, bicycles and electric motorcycles are so fast and accelerate as much as gasoline ones. The answer is yes, but that's a topic for another article.

Marzo y Abril son meses magníficos para venir a Ibiza y pedalear por sus caminos y carreteras.
La hierba está aún verde y los campos llenos de jaramagos no están quemados por el sol veraniego.

Me he llevado un sorpresón con los conductores. En todo el tiempo que llevo en la isla no me ha pitado nadie, algo muy normal en algunos otros sitios que he visitado, ni ninguno ha sido agresivo conmigo, más bien me han dejado circular muy tranquilo hasta que podían adelantarme.

Lo que más me ha gustado es circular por las carreteras secundarias de la parte norte de la isla donde se encuentran Santa Eulalia, San Carlos, San Juan, San Miguel, San Lorenzo y multitud de calas de gran belleza.

Una de las primeras ventajas que encontramos al circular en bicicleta eléctrica es que los tiempos que necesitamos para hacer un recorrido, son casi siempre iguales. ¿Porqué? Porque se puede mantener la misma velocidad media sin un gran esfuerzo. Incluso en tramos donde en un sentido es de subida y en otro de bajada, como por ejemplo de Santa Eulalia a San Miguel tardo unos 44 minutos y eso que hay más tramos de subida, sin embargo de San Miguel a Santa Eulalia tardo 37 minutos. No es una gran diferencia.

Otra ventaja importante es la económica. Estos 600 km me hubieran costado alrededor de 100 euros de gasolina. Cualquiera podría argumentar que el tiempo que se pierde en un trayecto también es dinero. Yo argumento que el tiempo que hay que emplear en buscar aparcamiento y caminar dentro de la ciudad hasta el punto de destino también debe ser contado y en trayectos cortos, viene a ser lo mismo.

Si, es más rápido ir de Santa Eulalia a Ibiza en coche, pero … ¿Es igual de efectivo cuando se entra en la ciudad? Aparcar, andar, tráfico … Mi tiempo de Ibiza a Santa Eulalia es más o menos de 37 minutos, a una media de 23 km/h. No mucho más de lo que se tarda en coche. Y no digamos si hay mercadillo de Es Canar o Las Dalias.

Creo que la bicicleta se inventó como un medio de transporte. Con la llegada del „utilitario“ la bicicleta se convirtió en un vehículo más de ocio y ha evolucionado hacia ese duro deporte que llamamos ciclismo en todas sus facetas. Parece ser que con la llegada de la crisis nuestras ciudades se han empezado a llenar de nuevos ciclistas convencidos no solo por el ahorro, sino porque la bici engancha, y se empieza a utilizar de nuevo la bicicleta como medio de transporte.

Sin embargo España es muy montañosa y muchos de nuestro pueblos y ciudades tienen algunas cuestas „importantes“ para la mayoría de los humanos. Este problema lo resuelve la bicicleta eléctrica, o como deberíamos llamarla, la bicicleta de pedaleo asistido. Las cuestas se convierten en llanos y el aire en contra no nos para en seco.
Y por supuesto, ir en bicicleta es un ejercicio que en verano nos puede dar un sofocón, o hacer que lleguemos sudados a los lugares donde tengamos que ir. La bicicleta de pedaleo asistido nos ayudará a no sudar o no sudar tanto y llegar frescos y oxigenados.

¿Algo malo sobre bicicletas de pedaleo asistido? Pocas cosas. Una situación que no quieres que pase es quedarte sin batería. Pero en las carreteras de interior existen muchos restaurantes con comida local o incluso internacional, y las playas y calas siempre suelen tener un restaurante o dos a su entrada. Es solo cuestión de pararse a tomar algo, descansar, y pedir amablemente si podemos cargar nuestras baterías.
También hay tiendas pequeñas donde abastecerse de comida y bebida y puntos de interés sea por su arquitectura o por su belleza natural que son muy visitados por locales y turistas.
Y pregunto … ¿Por qué no instalar torres de carga tanto para bicicletas como para coches y motos?

Muchos me preguntan si los coches y motos eléctricas son tan rápidos y aceleran tanto como los de gasolina. La respuesta es si, pero eso es tema de otro artículo.

To discover spectacular mountain views in Ibiza can only be done by riding a mountain bike.
For those who want to enjoy a less strenuous activity I propose a stroll in the countryside walking, horseback riding, with a bike or an e-bike.
I recently took a trip following Route 7, traveling the country side around Santa Eulalia. A blessing experience.
It is quiet, almost flat and easy to do. It runs through back and narrow asphalt roads with very little traffic, red fields and whitewashed houses and forest areas.

In the middle of the road a very pleasant surprise: Cas Campaner.

Stopping at Cas Campaner is like stopping time.
The local store is a great place for supplies and refreshment. Peaceful and friendly and warm welcome is assured. I recommend making a stop on the way.

We left at noon to enjoy the afternoon sun.  The Klever Mobility bikes translated this 18 km route into a walk around the block. The terrain is flat, and the asphalt is not everywhere in perfect condition, but the suspension works well.
There are 12 routes around the municipality of Santa Eulalia del Rio.

It is a suitable route for people of all levels with or without e-bikes.

Uno de los placeres de estar un tiempo en Ibiza es pasear un día soleado por el campo, andando, a caballo, en bicicleta o en e-bike.

Se que descubrir los espectaculares sitios de montaña en Ibiza solo se puede hacer montándose en una bicicleta de montaña y meterse por todas esas rutas que propone Kandani en sus recorridos.
Sin embargo me he sentido bendecido por la isla en esta ruta 7, recorriendo la zona de campo que rodea Santa Eulalia.

Es tranquila, casi llana y muy relajada de hacer, discurriendo por carreteras secundarias y algún que otro camino estrecho asfaltado y con muy poco tráfico.
Los campos rojizos recién cultivados ofrecen un color muy característico de la isla, así como sus casas blanqueadas y las zonas de bosque.

En mitad de la ruta una sorpresa muy agradable: Cas Campaner. Pararse en Cas Campaner es como parar el tiempo.
La tienda local donde compran los vecinos, es un estupendo lugar de avituallamiento. La serenidad es total y el trato amable y cálido. Recomiendo hacer un alto en el camino.

Hemos salido a mediodía a disfrutar del sol de la tarde. El verano se acerca pero el calor aún no aprieta. Las bicicletas de Klever Mobility nos llevan en volandas. El terreno es llano, y aunque el asfalto no esté en todos sitios en perfectas condiciones, la amortiguación es más que suficiente y el tráfico en gran parte del recorrido lo podríamos definir como inexistente.

El municipio de Santa Eulalia del Rio existen 12 rutas que recorren todo el municipio.
También una ruta apta de realizar por personas de todos los niveles. Creo que con los calores del verano hacer la ruta en bicicleta eléctrica se convierte en paseo y activa el movimiento sin llegar a ser extenuante.

.- Dani, you opened Kandani in 1995. Twenty years. How is achieved to reach such an age with so many economic ups and downs, especially those that occurred recently?

I do not think I have the formula for it but maybe dedication, love of work, customer care as maximum value of our business, continually investing in the business and being surrounded by a great team. These have been the main causes of maintaining a line of growth year after year despite the circumstances happening around this time.

.- Ibiza is a relatively mountainous island. Does this mean that your most important customers are those who are in great physical shape?

Not particularly. Ibiza offers a variety of roads and trails that can makes anyone enjoy fantastic journeys regardless of their physical condition either by road or mountain bikes.

 .- The tourist season starts in May and ends in late October. However the island is of an undeniably beauty and the temperature gentle enough in winter. Do you miss the influx of visitors offseason?

Ibiza effectively meets the conditions in which to receive visitors throughout the year, and undoubtedly we miss a longer season. Personally I think it takes very little to get to the point of receiving tourists throughout the year. The implication of airlines and maintain part of the services open (hotels, restaurants ..) would make this possible. The island provides everything else …
 

 .- Kandani has received 2 models of electric bicycles company Klever Mobility now, some more are coming in late April. You have tried the models. What is your opinion in reference to the conditions of the island?

Two models that offer elegance and comfort, equipped with high end components that provide safety and efficacy. The ideal bike to enjoy the island in a relaxed way. Its autonomy allows reaching any point on the island without recharging.

.- Do you think necessary a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles? If so, where will you place the stations?

As I said earlier the bikes have great autonomy, nevertheless I see interesting some recharging places in major tourist centers such as San Antonio, Ibiza, Santa Eulalia, San Jose and San Miguel.

.- Not want to push you, but we want to know the political support that any company engaged in making sports and leisure services as you could receive from local and regional institutions.

I do not know, until now I have never asked for it, but I have no doubt that anyone presenting a serious and responsible program will get the necessary aid

Give us your honest opinion to the following questions.
.- Three places in the interior of the island that no one should miss.

Santa Gertrudis, Es broll de Buscastell and the Morna Valley and surrounding areas.

.- Three coves and beaches that everyone should visit.

Ses Salines, Cala Conte and Aguas Blancas.

.- Three restaurants with local cuisine to those who have to go to lunch or dinner.

  Es Boldador (cala d'Hort), Cas Pagés and Cana Pepeta (San Lorenzo)

.- Back to winter and cycling. It seems that a growing number of visitors are those specializing in triathlon and both mountain and road cycling. Why?

Unlike what one could imagine, people are realizing that Ibiza is an island with sufficient extension and ramps, making it ideal for cycling in all its forms.

.- We know that you have done cycling for long time and even had a cycling school. Can you suggest some road or mountain routes?

I can suggest many and all of great beauty. In a same route one can toggle coast, inland and mountain. To give three examples, North Coast and San Juan starting and finishing in Santa Eulalia. From Talamanca you could go to visit the old town of Ibiza and finish in the natural park of Ses Salinas. And finally a tour that starts in San José, climb to s'Atalaya (the highest point of the island) and finishing in Cala D'hort opposite to Es Vedra island.

.- Do you think that electric bikes have a niche in the tourism rental market?

Definitely. More and more people are interested in electric bikes. Most tourists in Central Europe that are already using their own electric bike as a transport vehicle in their hometowns.

.- You've given electric bikes before. What has been so far the public that most demanded the service?

Mainly German and Dutch ....

.- Be bold. ¿Bike lanes on interior roads yes or no?

Yes, without any doubt.

.- Do you see the future of the island with good eyes?

Yes in general.

.- What is the main problem that you encounter in renting bikes?

Seasonality. The fact of working only six months hinders recruitment and immobilizes a stock of bikes and vehicles that require maintenance and involve fixing costs throughout the year.

.- What is the main problem that you have faced in renting electric bicycles ?. Do you think the new models of Klever Mobility will solve that problem?

Until now the main problem has been the one hand their autonomy and the limited availability of other models. With Klever I think we're going to cover these needs.

.- Automatic stations for tourism rental, yes or no?

Maybe in the future. Now I see it impractical.

.- To finish this interview give us a phrase, a special say from the locals .
